Progressive California Democratic Representative Ro Khanna criticized the Democratic convention for not allowing a Palestinian person to speak on the main stage. He described this decision as a “tragic mistake” that perpetuates the erasure of the Palestinian story and voice. This comes after the Uncommitted National Movement, a group advocating for Palestinian speakers at the convention, continued their sit-in outside the event. Muslim Women for Harris also disbanded in response to the campaign’s refusal to allow a Palestinian person to speak.
Abraham Aiyash, a Michigan House of Representatives leader, echoed Khanna’s sentiments, stating that denying Palestinians the opportunity to speak contradicts claims of wanting peace in Gaza. Representative Cori Bush joined activists in a pro-Palestinian sit-in outside the United Center, calling for Palestinian American representation at the convention.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump defended blocking a bipartisan immigration bill, stating it would have allowed millions of unvetted individuals into the US. Trump’s comments come as he visited the border with Mexico and accused the Biden administration of mishandling immigration.
The Democratic convention in Chicago has been marked by discussions of history, with political figures visiting a bookstore featuring artifacts from past conventions. Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville praised Chicago as a convention host city and highlighted lessons that can be learned from history. Overall, the convention has seen a mix of political tensions, calls for representation, and reflections on the past.
