A tragic shooting at Sanski Most High School in northwest Bosnia and Herzegovina has left three staff members dead, including the principal, secretary, and a teacher. The incident, which took place at 10:15 am, involved a school employee opening fire with an automatic rifle and attempting to take his own life. While schools in Bosnia are closed for the summer holiday, teachers were meeting to prepare for the upcoming school year at the time of the shooting, with no students present.
The suspect allegedly had a dispute with the school management, although police have not yet provided a motive for the attack. One other person was wounded in the incident and was reported to be in serious condition, receiving treatment at Banja Luka Hospital. Authorities and emergency services quickly responded to the scene in the small town located 124 miles northwest of Sarajevo.
While mass shootings are rare in Bosnia, the region has a proliferation of small arms and weapons following the conflicts of the 1990s. A 2010 study by the United Nations Development Programme estimated that there were approximately 750,000 illegal weapons in possession in Bosnia. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for continued efforts to address gun violence and ensure the safety of all individuals, especially in educational settings.
