US orders inspections of Boeing 787 aircraft after midair dive incident | Aviation

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered inspections of hundreds of Boeing 787 Dreamliners after a sudden midair dive during a flight in March injured dozens of passengers. The directive affects 158 US-registered airplanes and 737 airplanes worldwide. The incident on LATAM Flight 800, where the captain’s seat experienced involuntary movement forward causing a rapid descent, prompted the inspections. The FAA stated that the uncommanded horizontal movement of the seats could disconnect the auto-pilot, resulting in a rapid descent and potential injuries to passengers and crew. Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, has not yet commented on the directive. This is the latest safety issue for Boeing, following a deal to plead guilty to fraud after two fatal crashes of the 737 Max jetliner and a separate criminal investigation into a January incident where a 737 MAX operated by Alaska Airlines lost part of its fuselage mid-flight. The FAA is taking steps to address the unsafe condition in the Dreamliners to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
