At the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke out against former President Donald Trump’s legal woes, leading the crowd to chant “lock him up” in response. The chant was a variation of the “lock her up” refrain used by Trump during his 2016 campaign against Clinton, in reference to her use of a private email server. Clinton did not respond directly to the chants, but instead continued speaking until the audience quieted down.
Clinton also mocked Trump for falling asleep in court during his hush-money trial earlier in the year, and highlighted his 34 felony convictions related to falsifying business records. Vice President Kamala Harris has attempted to discourage such chants at her campaign rallies, possibly to avoid the fiery rhetoric that characterized Trump’s events.
Despite Trump’s legal troubles, experts suggest that he is unlikely to receive a prison sentence for a nonviolent, first-time offense. Clinton’s speech at the convention emphasized the historic nature of Harris’ candidacy and received enthusiastic applause from the audience. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, expressed astonishment and his wife was visibly moved by Clinton’s words. Overall, the convention was marked by calls for unity and progress within the Democratic party.
