USA Dominates Relay Events at Olympics; Barshim Earns Bronze in High Jump before Exiting Competition | Paris Olympics 2024 Update


The United States continued their dominance in track and field at the Paris Games as they secured their 14th gold medal with an eighth consecutive victory in the women’s 4×400-metre relay. A star-studded US team, including Olympic champions Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas, secured the gold in a time of 3:15.27. The Netherlands took silver and Great Britain grabbed bronze in the event.

In the men’s 4×400-metre relay, the US narrowly edged out Botswana in a thrilling finish, with Rai Benjamin holding off Letsile Tebogo to secure the gold in an Olympic record time of 2:54.43. Botswana took silver and Britain claimed bronze in a closely contested race.

In the field events, New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr won gold in the men’s high jump after a jump-off with American Shelby McEwen. The two athletes cleared 2.36 metres in regular competition but could not be separated, leading to a jump-off where Kerr emerged victorious. Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim, the defending champion, settled for bronze in the event.

American Masai Russell also had a standout performance, winning gold in the women’s 100-metre hurdles in a close finish, edging out French home favorite Cyrena Samba-Mayela and Tokyo champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn. Russell’s victory marked France’s first track medal of the Paris Games.

Overall, the US continued to showcase their track and field prowess at the Olympics, adding to their impressive medal tally in Paris.
