Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola claimed victory in the Olympic men’s marathon in Paris with a solo front-running performance, setting an Olympic record of 2:06:26. Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, aiming for a third consecutive gold, did not finish the race. Belgium’s Bashir Abdi took silver and Kenya’s Benson Kipruto claimed bronze. Tola’s win was a surprise as he was a late addition to the team. Kipchoge, considered the greatest marathon runner of all time, handed his shoes to a fan after dropping out around the 30km mark due to back pain. Despite this setback, Kipchoge expressed uncertainty about his future in marathons. The women’s marathon is set to conclude the Olympic athletics programme. Tola’s victory marked the first Ethiopian win in the men’s marathon in 24 years and was cheered on by Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie. Abdi and Kipruto fought with Ethiopia’s Deresa Geleta for podium spots, with Abdi finishing in 2:06:47 and Kipruto in 2:07:00. Kipruto dedicated his bronze medal to a late runner who broke the marathon world record. Kipchoge, eight minutes off the pace, accepted the tough day and reflected on his first DNF. The men’s marathon showcased impressive performances and surprising outcomes, setting the stage for the women’s event to follow.
