Former Capitol Police officers Harry Dunn and Aquilino Gonell, along with current Metropolitan Police Department Officer Daniel “Danny” Hodges, are campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris and presumptive vice presidential nominee Tim Walz to prevent former President Donald Trump from returning to the White House. The officers will travel to various states to meet with elected officials and community leaders to highlight the threat they believe Trump poses to democracy.
Dunn and Hodges believe that Harris and Walz are the best candidates to prevent Trump’s return, with Hodges describing them as “powerful forces for good.” They emphasize the importance of voting for the Democratic ticket to protect democracy and the country.
The officers, who were present at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 attack, express gratitude for Biden’s work and the smooth transition to Harris. They also point out that many individuals facing criminal consequences for their actions on Jan. 6 are now regretful and feel they were manipulated by Trump’s false claims about the election. Despite this, some supporters are still clinging to Trump’s lies in hopes of avoiding criminal accountability.
Dunn emphasizes the importance of educating voters on the events of Jan. 6 and the threat they believe Trump poses to democracy. Over 1,400 defendants have been charged in connection with the Capitol attack, with over 1,000 convictions and various sentences handed out. Dunn and the other officers hope to raise awareness about the ongoing threat posed by Trump and the importance of voting in the upcoming election.
