In a shocking revelation, more than a thousand people have come forward alleging abuse at New Hampshire’s juvenile jail and other youth facilities run or contracted by the state. This scandal, considered one of the largest youth detention abuse cases in American history, has finally come to light through an analysis of nearly 1,300 lawsuits filed by victims of abuse in state custody. Through a partnership between NHPR’s Document team and The Pudding, this investigation has exposed a history of alleged abuse at New Hampshire’s youth facilities.
The team has also produced a three-part podcast series titled “The Youth Development Center,” hosted by NHPR’s Jason Moon. This series delves deep into the black box of the juvenile justice system, revealing confidential documents and untold stories of misconduct, retaliation, courage, compassion, and triumph. The podcast aims to shed light on the systemic issues that allowed this abuse to persist for decades.
As the state responds to this scandal by rebuilding the old Youth Development Center, establishing a settlement fund for victims, and initiating criminal trials for former staff, the question of justice for those who were abused remains complex. For many victims, justice means acknowledgement and accountability from the state and the public. Through their brave testimony and the comprehensive reporting of NHPR, the hope is that the victims of abuse at these youth facilities will finally be heard and receive the recognition they deserve.
