The Department of Psychiatry at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai held a meeting on ‘The Evidence is clear: Invest in Prevention’ to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse. Dean C. Dharmaraj highlighted the prevalence of drug usage and its impact on families. Head of Psychiatry V. Geethaanjali warned about the dangers of new forms of drug consumption, such as smokeless products, and how it can affect students’ social lives and behavior.
Resident Medical Officer Saravanan also emphasized the gender-neutral nature of drug abuse, citing the recent Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. He stressed the importance of physical activity in maintaining mental health, especially among youth who are increasingly sedentary due to mobile phone usage. The hospital’s deaddiction center treats hundreds of patients daily with various therapies.
In conjunction with the meeting, a drug awareness program was conducted at Al Ameen Higher Secondary School, where Assistant Commissioner of Police Jyothimurugan urged students to report any drug or alcohol usage among their peers. The event also saw a donation of books worth ₹30,000 to the deaddiction center by T.R. Paravathavardhini from Littles Centre for Children.
The meeting and subsequent awareness programs aim to address the growing issue of drug abuse and emphasize the importance of prevention, treatment, and community involvement in combating substance abuse. The medical experts and law enforcement officials present hope to educate and empower individuals to make healthier choices and seek help when necessary.
