Bolivia has a history of political turmoil, with 190 coups throughout its history, leading to military discontent with defending the established order.
During the coup attempt, General Zuñiga briefly entered the palace before making a speech criticizing Mr. Arce’s government. The military’s initial move was condemned by regional leaders, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico. Mexico provided asylum to Mr. Morales after he stepped down in 2019 amid violent protests.
With little support for the coup attempt in Bolivia, it is seen as an adventure by a small group of soldiers. The attorney general has opened an investigation into General Zuñiga and other participants, seeking maximum punishment for those responsible. Mr. Arce has replaced General Zuñiga and other military heads, affirming his commitment to democracy and the rule of law in Bolivia.
