Edmunds selects SUVs that save you money at the pump without being hybrids

Driving a fuel-efficient SUV doesn’t have to mean opting for a hybrid or electric vehicle. Several SUV models are currently available that offer impressive gas mileage without the need for electrification. Edmunds’ car experts have compiled a list of the top five fuel-efficient SUVs in their class based on EPA ratings, all of which are equipped with all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive for enhanced traction.

Starting with the extra-small SUV category, the Toyota Corolla Cross stands out with an EPA-estimated 32 mpg in combined driving and a starting price of $25,210. Moving to the small SUV segment, the Nissan Rogue leads the pack with an EPA-estimated 33 mpg and a starting price of $30,240. In the midsize SUV category, the Subaru Outback offers up to 28 mpg and a starting price of $30,290. The midsize three-row SUV Kia Sorento achieves up to 26 mpg and starts at $33,365, while the full-size Chevrolet Tahoe reaches an impressive 24 mpg and starts at $59,190.

While there are more fuel-efficient SUVs available, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, these models represent the best gas-fueled options for the 2024 model year. By choosing one of these fuel-efficient SUVs, drivers can save money at the pump without sacrificing space, power, or capability.
