Abortion Continues to Divide New Hampshire Politics on Second Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Repeal

New Hampshire Republicans, in response to Democrats’ focus on abortion access as the 2024 campaigns approach, have launched a six-figure spending campaign to argue that the issue is being exaggerated. They claim that the abortion bans in the state are in line with neighboring liberal states and are an important measure to protect common-sense late-term measures.

The Republicans have launched a website, abortionfactsnh.org, to present what they say is the truth about abortion access in New Hampshire. They argue that the state’s laws are similar to neighboring liberal states, despite New Hampshire only having a ban on abortion after 24 weeks.

In contrast, Planned Parenthood Votes has launched a spending campaign of over $750,000 to focus on Republican candidates who have supported restrictions on abortion in the past. They argue that anti-abortion candidates cannot rewrite their history and have consistently pushed for more restrictions on abortion.

With the 2024 presidential race approaching, New Hampshire Republicans might struggle to separate themselves from the national party’s stance on abortion restrictions. Political scientists suggest that the issue may be influenced by the positions of Joe Biden and Donald Trump as they seek reelection. National-level voices may overshadow state-level voices in a presidential election year.
